Types Of Resumes

It shouldn’t depend on which website you visit to learn of the different types of resumes. It does, but it shouldn’t. Some websites, for instance, tell you there are three types of resumes. Others say there are four basic types of resumes. Some call one type one thing (the reverse chronological), while still others call the same time something a little different (just chronological). What it does depend on is what type of job you are going for and which skills, abilities, general or specific background, and qualifications you need to highlight for that potential job. Differences exist in opinions about resume length, what is included in each of the resume types, and even what the disadvantages and advantages are of each type.

The following does not intend to compete with the other information or contest it, only to clarify it.

LENGTH For many job searches, such as those in the business arena, the efficiency of the one-page resume is best. This is because the potential employer is supremely busy and will, if he/she gets a load of application packets, need to access information quickly…maybe even by a process of elimination. However…one of the types of resumes—the CV, or curriculum vitae (life’s work, in Latin)—is likely longer, as it includes all pertinent information on education, experience, volunteer work, publishing history, and more. If you are not doing a vita, or if the job announcement does not specify length of resume preferred, try to think of getting everything on one page as giving succinct, condensed information to the boss—the same way you would if you worked for him/her and were asked a quick question requiring a brief but thorough (I know, contradictory, maybe) response.

FORMAT Here’s where the types of resumes come in:

Chronological, a.k.a. Reverse Chronological—Focusing on experience, consistent and evolving career development, and relevant accomplishments, the reverse/chronological includes education and skill set info, but emphasizes work done. Put the most recent job/position first, then go backwards in time.

Functional—Focusing on skills and abilities, the functional resume clusters related functions, one set per passage.

Combination—As the label suggests, the combination uses both work experience and functions/duties performed previously in each of the past jobs held.

CV, or Curriculum Vitae—for education, medical, and scientific fields in particular, for example, the CV covers education, papers and other published materials, related volunteer/community work, special achievements and awards/honors, and other relevant information.

STYLE

Neat. Standard or popular font. Adequate spacing. Action verbs. Your personal/professional contact information. If, in addition, you are going for a creative job, you may wish to add an extra something that points to your “creativity”. Makes sense, huh?

There are reasons for using each of the types of resumes as well as benefits and liabilities of each type, etc., on a number of well-wrought sites. One site, for example, offers a very clearly explained tutorial, complete with samples/models. Check out America’s Career Info Net (acinet.org), for examples and explanations…and for much more applicable strategies that are laid out here.

Best of luck, and do what works for you to get you the work you want, need, and deserve…which is what all of the types of resumes prove, after all.
