When you have made the decision to get a tattoo, you have hopefully given it a great amount of thought in regard to what type of tattoo design you want and where you want to put it. Since a tattoo is a direct reflection of you, you want to take the time to plan it right, shop around! Just don’t go get the first tattoo you see at just any old tattoo parlor. You want to look for a talented tattoo artist that you can have a couple or three consultations with to discuss tattoo designs, prices, and to look at his or her past work. This will also give you a chance to look around the studio and ask questions regarding aseptic technique, etc. You want to make sure that the tattoo artist uses a new set of sterile needles and ink pots on each person to ensure that you do not contract any blood borne diseases, such as Hepatitis B or C, or HIV. Most reputable licensed tattoo parlors practice sterile technique and you have the right to be concerned about your health, and no one should be offended that you are requesting information for your own reassurance.
Once you have thought about all of the social issues and stereotypes about people with tattoos, what your employer and family is going to think, and if you can live with it for the rest of your life, you are ready to move forward! Start getting an idea about what type of tattoo design you want. Start visiting local tattoo studios and visit with the artists if they have a few minutes, and look at what type of work these tattoo artists have done on other people. Look at their tattoo design portfolios and ask questions. Try to have a few pictures in hand of your tattoo design ideas, and ask to schedule a consultation with the artist when you have found a studio that you like. The tattoo artist will then make a few recommendations regarding what type of tattoo design you want and where you want to put it. You can always go back for a second or even third consultation until you are comfortable and are in agreement with the artist about the tattoo design and terms, especially if it is going to be a large tattoo that requires more extensive planning.
You can get lots of ideas for tattoo design on the web. Also check out tattoo programs featured on cable and satellite TV channels for more ideas and just some interesting background information on the history and art of tattooing. Also take note of other people you come into contact with that have interesting tattoo design. Ask them where they went and who did the tattoo, and how they came up with their particular tattoo design. Tattoos are as unique as the individual.
