Special Toys
My sisters and I are in the processing of cleaning out our mother’s home. She has moved into a senior apartment building. She had lived in the five bedroom family home for over 50 years. There is so much to go through that the task seems overwhelming. When we first started packing up boxes we each took a separate room and went to work. We found that we kept stopping what we were doing to show each other an item that we found or to ask each other their opinion on what should be done with certain items. We soon decided that it would be much more efficient to work in the same room together. We thought this would go faster, however we made the mistake of starting in the toy room.
There were five children that were raised in this home over a long period of time. I am the youngest in the family and my oldest sister is eighteen years older than I am. This means that the toys my mother had saved ranged from the 1940’s through the 1960’s. Some of the special toys that mom knew were collectibles were displayed on shelves. The toy room had been used for several years for the grandchildren to play in. Most of them are now adults with children of their own. There was a sprinkling of newer toys that the grandchildren had left at grandma’s house through the years. As we started to go through the special toys we were all consumed with different memories. My oldest sister found a doll family and clothes that had been given to her by her godmother. She had forgotten about these special toys. She set them aside to take home with her. I found that my mother had kept a set of china dishes and serving tray that I had been given on my fourth birthday. When I was growing up I was told that these were special toys and were not meant to be played with. The set was still in the original packaging. I shared with my sisters how upset I was when I was little because I was not allowed to play with the dishes and serving tray. Now I was very thankful to still have my special toys that I can display in my home. There were several other special toys that we divided between us. The rest of the things in the toy room we boxed so that the grandchildren can sort through them to see if they want to keep any.
We still have several rooms to go through. We find that sorting through the memories is as much work as sorting through the items in the house. We have decided to continue to take our time as we go through this process. We are also trying not to fill our own homes with all the things that are left. At this point I have only brought home a few dishes and my special toys.
