Spanish Immersion Programs
Spanish immersion programs are definitely the best way to get a good grasp of the language as fast as possible. You can’t really learn Spanish any faster than being surrounded by it at all times, and forced to use it on a regular basis. In addition to this, Spanish immersion programs also have an intense course study, so not only are you using it to get by every day, but you’re also knee deep in studying the language like you would in a college setting. This combination of traditional studying and everyday usage practically shoves the language down your throat, and you’ll be speaking like a native so fast it’ll surprise you.
The Spanish immersion program I used was through a company called Bridge Abroad. A well established language program, Bridge Abroad has over 30 different locations where you can learn Spanish worldwide. Bridge Abroad not only has a number of Spanish immersion programs in the Americas, but also has a bunch of programs in Spain itself. Of course, Spanish in Spain is different than Spanish in the Americas, so you need to decide which kind of Spanish you want to learn. If you are like me and wanted to learn Spanish because it is becoming so commonly spoken in the United States, then I definitely recommend learning Spanish in a Central or South American location.
I chose Costa Rica as my location when I did my Spanish immersion program, and it was amazing. Bridge Abroad actually has a number of different Costa Rica locations to choose from, ranging from remote towns to the nation’s bustling capital at San Jose. I opted for a more remote location at the beach side town of Manuel Antonio. A very scenic and serene location, this area of Costa Rica still has plenty of culture and activity to it, and is only a couple of hours from San Jose.
The great thing about Spanish immersion programs in addition to their amazing effectiveness, is their very reasonable price. Most of the programs in the Americas are very affordable; I spent four weeks studying in Costa Rica and the sum total of room, board, tuition, and airfare was less than the ten-day vacation without classes I took to Spain last year. I stayed with a host family, who was very kind and added some added warmth to my trip, helping with my Spanish considerably. If the idea of staying with a host family bothers you, you can arrange for hotel or apartment housing as well at very little extra cost. Personally, I prefer the host family arrangement in Spanish immersion programs because it makes the immersion so much more complete.
