Singing Competitions
After suffering through every season of “American Idol” thus far, you have had enough and are ready to showcase your singing talent to the world. Compared to some of those people on television, you can’t be that bad, right? Entering singing competitions must be the way to stardom. Enter a few singing competitions, impress a few judges and then you’re off to begin touring. Right? Not quite.
As far as televised singing competitions go, remember that they are entertainment shows and may be just as scripted as a weekly drama series. While there really are singers that bad, the producers are delighted when these vocally impaired individuals audition so that the strange sounds can be broadcast to the world and likewise ratings increase. Then of course, they highlight the phenomenally gifted singers and encourage them on as if an idol sensation were living in every neighborhood.
The fact is that the majority of auditions at singing competitions end up being average. Auditioning singers are neither terrible nor exceptionally gifted, somewhere between tolerable and good, but not ready for a major contract.
Therefore, singing competitions must be played in the spirit of fun. An aspiring singer must not get so wrapped up in the competition that he or she lives and breathes on the outcome. They must sing for the love and for the fun of it.
Now that is not to say, that the odds are impossible. Yes, a truly talented singer can be noticed and the only way to get noticed is to start singing and start competing publicly. There is a bit of luck involved.
Singing competitions are very unpredictable and timing, mood and appearances are very important in determining who walks away as a winner. Even beyond luck, however, the ability to perform well under intense pressure is a requirement. While a singer may have a gifted voice and be experienced in singing, a nervous and uneven performance with some potential will simply not be enough for the judges to reward. If a singer is able to sing well under pressure and exceptionally well at that, besting even ten other phenomenal singers, a career can indeed be launched from such small beginnings. .
Although many people can sing well, in reality only one percent of the population will ever make a living through music. Add to that the chances of winning any of the singing competitions is very small and the likelihood of you being crowned the winner is minute.
Certainly those are not odds to gamble an entire life on. But for those who truly enjoy competing, aren’t afraid to lose, and have fun performing for others, singing competitions are a thrill and an honor.
For a better chance at developing a singing career, a singer may wish to enter local singing competitions and work their way up slowly, rather than gambling on a single moment in front of the world.
