Return To Castle Wolfenstein
As one of the most popular first person shooter games, and probably the one game that more than any other put the genre on the map, Castle Wolfenstein 3D is nothing short of a classic computer game. Even before the ‘3D’ first person shoot game came out, Castle Wolfenstein was already popular as a overhead ‘2D’ shooter, and I used to play it for hours on end as a kid. When the 3D came out it was like nothing I’d ever seen before, and it has influence so many games since.
When I learned that the original first person shooter game was coming out with a long overdue sequel, ‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein’, I was needless to say excited. I download the demo for Return to Castle Wolfenstein as soon as it came out and was even more anxious for the full game to be released. I couldn’t wait to be in a Nazi shooting paradise all over again.
There’s just something about shooting Nazi’s that’s inherently satisfying, and it had been awhile since that craving of mine had been really filled. Sure, there’s plenty of other games where you can shoot Nazis, but they just feel like everyday German soldiers, like people with feelings and mothers that will miss them. The Wolfenstein games had always mastered this Nazi quality in the bad guys without complicating things with undue realism, and by the look of the Return to Castle Wolfenstein demo it looked as though that hadn’t changed too much.
When I finally did get my hands on the full Return to Castle Wolfenstein game I was a touch disappointed. First of all, it was pretty much riddled with bizarre bugs, but I’ve come to almost expect that with games today. There are some patches out for it now, and it works relatively well for the most part, but still in the end it just feels like every other first person shooter out there. It doesn’t really distinguish itself that much from other games in the genre, which is a little disappointing since the Wolfenstein games basically pioneered the genre in the first place.
Having said all that, I still think Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a good game, and I recommend it to anyone that either played the originals, or just enjoys a good first person shooter. Or to anyone that likes shooting Nazis. And who doesn’t like to shoot Nazis?
