There are fee-based print on demand publishing services that kind-of resemble the dreaded vanity publishing process that has taken many dollars away from many dreamers. The service is not exactly like self-publishing but it does bear a spooky resemblance.
Here is where print on demand may not be quite so great. Since the system is so cost effective, the publishers will usually accept any manuscript. Why not? There is nothing to lose. If the book doesn’t sell the print on demand company has invested nothing. If it does, then there is a profit.
The ramifications for this lie in the editing. There are few writers who can put together a great book without a great editor. The print on demand organizations do not put much effort into the editing process. Some of the books are printed with no editing what-so-ever.
There are very good print on demand companies out there that will edit your book and will market it. Make sure to research before taking any big steps with your beloved manuscript.
