Horror stories from people who gave in to the whim of a friend who had just purchased piercing supplies and now considered him or herself an expert abound.
The ready availability of piercing supplies may make it tempting for some enthusiasts to attempt piercings on their own. However, piercings should always be done by an experienced professional. Since piercing supplies can be obtained easily, it is very important to choose a professional carefully, considering factors such as sanitation of their shop or location and reliable word of mouth recommendations.
Those considering a piercing are encouraged to visit several studios and ask questions. What piercing supplies are used in the shop? Does the piercer have a portfolio? One of the most critical things to assess is if the shop’s piercing supplies include an autoclave. An autoclave is used to sanitize any reusable equipment that may be used in your piercing. Other questions pertaining to piercing supplies involve pens. Many piercers mark the skin with a pen prior to performing the actual piercing. Is the pen that will be used new, and will it be thrown away after use?
Another simple consideration is one that may be easily overlooked. Does the piercer have and wear disposable gloves when performing each and every piercing?
The materials used vary somewhat based on which part of the body you are having pierced. For ears, an ear piercing gun is used. Most other piercings are done with a needle. When choosing where you would like your piercing to be, you should consider factors such as dress codes at your work. If you wish to have your jewelry constantly on display, you might consider a face piercing. There are many choices for face piercings alone, including the nostril or septum, the eyebrow, the labret and the cheek.
If you wish to keep your piercing in a place where you can choose to conceal it, you may consider a naval piercing. Genital piercings are also becoming increasingly more popular.
Although most of the items needed to care for your piercing at home are available in drugstores, you might want to consider the availability of after-care piercing supplies in the studios you are considering. Piercings should be cleaned regularly with liquid soap, and carefully rinsed and dried after each cleaning. You should pay special attention to cleaning your piercing after a workout or other heavy physical activity.
