Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth is one of the most recognizable faces in professional poker today, and is the subject for both praise and criticism amongst poker players and fans around the world. With an astounding nine World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, everyone may not like him but his talent for poker is universally respected by professional poker players and is feared by anyone sitting at the same card table as him.
Born on July 16th in Madison, Wisconsin, Phillip J. Hellmuth spent three years studying at the University of Wisconsin before leaving to pursue his dream of being a professional poker player. At the age of only 24 years old, he won the World Series of Poker Main event of 1989, setting the record for being the youngest person to ever do so. His brash and often arrogant attitude about his win earned him an early reputation for being a 'poker brat'.
Much of Phil's fame is focused on the way he behaves during poker games. Many other poker players find his commentary abusive and immature, and he is well known for his inability to take a loss gracefully. In a game like poker, often times you can play a hand perfectly but still lose to a lucky draw, a phenomenon poker player refer to as a 'bad beat'. While other poker players seem to accept these beats with at least a modicum of poise, Phil Hellmuth tends to leave tables in an uproar.
Phil Hellmuth has had most of his poker success playing Texas Hold'em in tournaments; all of his WSOP bracelets are from Hold'em events. Though he is a respected tournament player, he has a reputation for being a terrible high stakes cash poker player.
Away from the poker table, Phil Hellmuth has become a successful author writing books about poker, such as 'The Greatest Poker Hands ever Played', 'Play Poker like the Pros', and 'Bad Beats and Lucky Draws'. He has also written a number of articles for 'Card Player Magazine', and has made a number of television appearances on shows such as 'Fulltilt Poker.net's Learn From the Pros'.
A poker legend and icon, whenever there is a famous Hold'em event there is a good chance that Phil Hellmuth will be there. He has player tournaments around the world, from Las Vegas to Monaco, and has firmly established his grasp on the professioanl poker world. In the end, however, it may just be his 'poker brat' reputation that he is best remember for.
