As a confirmed lifelong book-lover, one of my greatest joys is adding wonderful titles to my personal collection whenever I can. So to me, there is nothing more frustrating than trying to find an old work by one of my favorite authors only to discover that it's no longer being printed. Years ago, tracking down out of print books was a time-consuming and often very expensive process. I had to call or visit all the secondhand bookstores in my area, and was pretty much stuck accepting whatever prices the dealer chose to charge simply because I had no other options. Back then, paying higher prices was better than not getting the title that I wanted for my collection.
These days, however, buying out of print books has become much easier and more affordable for average consumers like you and me. That's because the Internet makes it possible to locate out of print books in a matter of seconds. So now whenever I want to buy a hard-to-find title, I go online instead of getting on the phone and making a tedious round of calls. When I'm online, I can browse through a number of websites to check on the price and condition of the particular book I want without even having to leave my home. Not only does this method of shopping for out of print books save me time, it saves me money. I am no longer limited to stores operating near my home, so I have much more flexibility and bargaining power, which usually results in much lower prices than I used to pay before.
Literature lovers and collectors aren't the only ones who can benefit from websites offering out of print books. College students would do well to take advantage of this type of service, too. We all know that university bookstores and even national chains offer textbooks at outrageous prices. Most students try to buy used texts whenever possible in order to save some money; but when the bookstore runs out of used copies, the students are stuck buying brand new versions. In these instances, the smart play might be to find an earlier version of the text and purchase that instead. A quick side-by-side comparison of different editions of the same textbook will not reveal many substantial differences. In fact, I would say that most new editions are pumped out each year to take care of typos and other minor corrections rather than to make significant changes to the content. By locating older out of print books, students can end up saving a lot of money.
