If you want people to discover your art works (and I am sure you do if you are an artist) online art galleries can be an invaluable aid to improving your prospects of success, and maximizing exposure. The fact is that, even if online art galleries are not as effective as open studios, connections, and openings, they are still a must. The simplicity of setting them up, and their low maintenance and low cost of maintenance means that, even if they only produce one or two sales a year, online art galleries are still worth the costs for any artist.
I've been running an online art galleries site for years, and as an artist myself, I will level with you. These online art galleries will not single handedly make your career. You will still have to hustle to find publicity, and still have to use all of your connections to the fullest, no matter how well you maintain your online art galleries. But what they will do, and have done for me and so many others, is provide an easy way for people to check out your work once they have the interest.
If, for example, you are working at an art fair and showing your works, it is a necessity to have an online art gallery already set up. That way, when you give out your business cars, people will have the opportunity to check you out in their leisure and peruse the full range of your works. Quite often, you will meet people at art fairs who are unwilling to make an immediate purchase, but are willing to think about it and consider getting something later. What setting up online art galleries does is give these people the opportunity to look over your work with their friends and family and, if they are interested, make a later purchase.
Without online art galleries, a possible future buyer is likely to forget all about you, and as a result you will probably never be able to sell to him or her. But using online art galleries means that that person can come back later and look more at your art, and if they see something that they like, they can purchase it from you. I can not tell you quite how many sales I have gotten from this method but, you can take it from me, it has been quite a few.
