Marshmallow
Long before reality TV and the hypothetical questions of what one ___ would you take if you knew you would be “stranded” on an island, there were mind games and interpersonal dynamics exercises in psych classes of the same discipline (i.e., psychology or social psychology). When we were in college, I remember the foods question, the one asking which one food you could stand to eat for a long period of time if you only had one food and no other choices, etc.. Many people, of course, name chocolate. Others name pizza, beer, pasta, or protein of some sort. I think I said spaghetti and meatballs (thinking of them as one food as they are included in one dish, that is).
But now that I am older and not wiser but freer—having no one to dictate, or disturb, or show disgust for my eating habits, I stock my fridge and pantry with the one food I could eat for an eternity: marshmallow. Especially at this time of year (pre-Easter), I find marshmallow a yummy, versatile, and many-optioned foodstuff…though many will say this is by no stretch of the imagination a “food”. Whatever. Around Easter, there are the infamous marshmallow Peeps. I love to suck on them, squish them, freeze them, and even wait for them to harden…as they are chewier that way. The same with the marshmallow eggs, which are, yes, chocolate-covered and therefore maybe would be contested as “one” food, but I just love that they are 1) in an egg carton I can re-use for some quirky craft project; 2) are cheap, one of the cheapest candies on the market; and 3) also great when they get older or are frozen.
Okay, so there are a zillion marshmallow candies, and yes, when I can FIND them, Mallomars make me NUTS!!!!!! REAL chocolate over cookie and marshmallow. There are home-made foods you can make with marshmallow…including the traditional yams, the most typical hot chocolate topping, and the irresistible fudge recipres…. But then, then, there is my number one icon. My god or goddess. My pantry’s superstar: Marshmallow Fluff. This stuff can be used for all of the above, plus for the number one suburbia snack, the Rice Crispy square. It can also be a wonderful ice cream topping, which takes on a caramel consistency when it slightly freezes but doesn’t. But two absolute best ways to officially make yourself a Marshmallow Fluff connoisseur or queen of marshmallow kingdom or king of marshmallow fame…are as follows: eat with a spoon or make the legendary “Fluffernutter”—peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff on WHITE bread (or on homemade, yeasty, buttery bread or toast) and straight from the perky red, white, and blue plastic tub…by the spoonfuls.
I grew up with this stuff replacing silly jellies and jams. We cooked with it, ate it straight, and topped whatever we could get away with topping with it. I moved away from home almost 30 years ago. But I do not miss the marshmallow dream stuff—which is only on the East Coast—because my sister packs it up in cases of care packages for me and ships it to me. Hence, my pantry is stocked with the one food I would be able to eat for a long period of time…or, conversely, would not be able to live without for long periods of time.
By the way, if you are a marshmallow fan or a marshmallow Peeps fan, you need to check out peep or peeps.com. They do some brutal “experiments” on those poor guys.
