Okay, so you've got your first credit card. Now it's time to go completely crazy and spend like a trust fund kid. Right? Well, if that's your big plan, I'd do some re-thinking. It's certainly understandable that credit cards can be rather intriguing. In fact, they offer us poor college students or broke newly weds an extra form of capital; which can actually allow us to spend beyond our means. However, this wild behavior will only get you in a bind. This is what all the major credit card companies want you to do. Take my advice and don't fall for it. In fact, they will hit you with the big spiel about 0% on balance transfers until May of next year. Although these pitches sound ideal, the tables can turn on a dime. Did you read the entire application? What does the fine print on the back say? It might say that the APR is rocketing up to 13.9% by next year. Yikes! They always do that. It's a classic tactic of major credit card companies. Okay, so we've established the downsides of credit cards in general. The good news is that major credit card companies also have some finer points. For example, a credit card from one of the major credit card companies is accepted virtually anywhere and everywhere. Visa and MasterCard are certainly the leaders of the pack. American Express and Discover cards follow close behind. All of these plastic sidekicks are amongst the major credit card companies. I have to admit a credit card can save your butt at times. Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you miscalculated the amount of cash you would need? Well, this is when the major credit card companies save our butts. You can simply pull out your Visa or MasterCard and handle the bill. The key to playing this credit card game is not getting behind. If you can pay off your balance each month, then you're golden. With major credit card companies or any form of credit card for that matter, it's all about keeping up. Don't leave a balance on the card, then you won't lose any cash. It can be a win-win situation.
