Better Living for a better tomorrow

La Jolla Beach

My closest girlfriend and a guy who wanted to get in on the trip and I went to San Diego to pick up another friend and bring him back to Marin. On the way down, besides stopping in other great areas besides later slipping over the border to check out the night life, we found an especially favored spot, La Jolla Beach. An old college buddy had temporarily stayed there years earlier, and was often mailing me post cards of her wonderful time at La Jolla Beach and the surrounding area, so on this Southern California road trip, I made it a must on our mostly casual itinerary.

If you are driving south along the coast, in fact, you cannot miss La Jolla Beach—or beaches—as you drive right through it, along it, almost on it. It is as if you have been magically transported to a Mediterranean town: the sand is white; the buildings are white; the sun is bright; the people are tanned, healthy, and equally bright-eyed and bright smiled. People are happy and relaxed, as they are in many a beach town, but they are more so in La Jolla beach districts. It is as if they have been there for centuries, have shared the land with many generations of well-adjusted, happy fellows, and embrace the environment…becoming a natural and inevitable part of the La Jolla Beach environs.

My friends and I went in to a diner. The La Jolla Beach crowd was animated without being noisy; the servers delightful accommodating and cheery. We went onto the sands of the La Jolla Beach along the highway, and the same friendly, almost giddy people were lolling about, tossing Frisbees, or bouncing about in the temperate surf. After remarking at this oddly contagious atmosphere, we decided to test further the impressions we got from the La Jolla Beach crowds and public service people, and went into a chain drug store. The clerks were absolutely thrilled to discuss the driftwood knick knacks or air plant souvenirs, not as pushy sales folk but certainly as if they had great amounts of stock in the company and would benefit beyond a paycheck if we bought a five-penny post card.

Yes, the people benefit who live in the La Jolla beach region of Southern California. They are healthy and happy and whole. They likely invest time and energy in hiking the sandstone cliffs, snorkeling the pretty waters, sharing the arts and sciences and natural studies, or just communing under the sun at a sweet café, a savvy shop, or a chic entertainment and activities center—all of which are many and open and accessible to residents and tourists alike.

You really feel like one of them, and they seem to feel like part of it all—all of the beauty and magnificence that is a La Jolla Beach resort or residence, hillside or shoreline spot.
