Joseph Phillips Insignia
Joseph Phelps Insignia has become a household name for wine lovers across the United States since being ranked the number one Wine of the Year in Wine Spectator's review of the best wines in 2005. This distinctive honor distinguishes the 2002 Joseph Phelps Insignia as the most outstanding of the wines tasted in the competition.
This rare distinction puts the wine above the 12,400 other wines from around the world that are tested for the year-end review. The judges complete a series of blind taste-tests, painstakingly eliminating one after the next until finally finding the winning wine. In 2005, that winning wine was Joseph Phelps Insignia.
Though the wine won the magnificent distinction, it is a relatively new wine. The Joseph Phelps Insignia first appeared in1978 stemming from the 1974 vintage. The California winery had little idea that the creation would aspire to such heights. However, the wine has held the honor of fifth and third places in previous years; third in 1997 and fifth in 2000 out of Wine Spectator’s top one-hundred wines.
One would think that such a wine would have been produced an individual who spent a lifetime dedicated to the creation of the perfect wine. But the founder, Joseph Phelps, was a construction worker who headed towards Napa Valley in the 1970’s. There, he built Souverian Winery. Just southeast of that, he designed and built his very own winery that would eventually produce the award-winning Joseph Phelps Insignia wine.
The Phelps Insignia is not the only wine produced by the winery. The label is also famous for its creative endeavors with Syrah. This unique wine could have possibly disappeared from the shelves until the Phelps winery played with the Rhone varietal, presenting it to an enthusiastic audience in 1977. And the winery also produces an outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Other wines promise to become favorites among the enthusiasts with the addition of a new winery that will open in 2007.
Although I truly loved the Joseph Phelps Insignia, I do favor the Phelps Pinot Noir. I favor the Pinot Noir because the magnificent wine is a masterpiece, in my estimation. When I took the glass to my mouth, I was flooded with the mellow, woody aroma permeating from the wine. Its flavor was so rich that I thought I could bite into it. Yet the overall feel of the Pinot Noir was soft. The professionals opt for the Joseph Phelps Insignia, but I still stay true to my beloved Pinot Noir.
