Job Search

Love them or hate them, at some point I our lives, all of us have to go through the dreaded job search. To most people, a job search is a necessary evil – an abomination to be borne with because – and only because, it comes with the prospect of a job at the end of it. To others, it is a painful, humiliating process that makes them despise themselves, but a few people take great pleasure in searching for and getting that brand new job. Here’s how you too can be one of them.

A job search need not be a disturbing or intimidating prospect. Provided you follow a few basic tips and tricks, you can make your job search exciting and interesting. What’s more, while on the job search, you can actually learn much more about the job and learn to enjoy it all the more.

The first tip of effective job search is to network. You need to know all the people in the industry you are targeting as well in allied industries. This way, you will be more likely to hear about your dream job much before anyone else does. Statistics reveal that most position that need to be filled – approximately 80% – are already filled from within the company or through referrals by existing company employees. Only a relatively small percentage of jobs actually get advertised in the newspapers and job sites. So if you need to find out about the bulk of the jobs, networking is the only way to do it.

And networking is simple. Join up with a number of clubs and associations that are related to your industry. For instance, if advertising is where you want to be, find out more about the eligibility requirements of the Ad Club in your region. If there are frequent informal meeting of the ad crowd in certain restaurants/pubs in your locality, try to get invited. Attend seminars and conferences of interest to people in your targeted profession and who knows, you could make your job search not just interesting, but fulfilling as well.

If networking doesn’t work, you can rely on the expertise of good consultants to help you land your dream job. Consultants are an essential element of any good job search. Most MNCs and corporate organizations often rely on human resource consultants to help them find the right candidates for the job. And if you happen to be listed with the right human resource consultants, then your job search will yield results that much faster. Also, the right human resource consultants can offer employers structured referral and verification services, making your job search simpler, effective and much quicker than conventional job search ever could.

A final tip is to scour online classifieds for paying gigs. Most companies start off with offering smaller, part-time gigs, which could very well morph into full-time paying professions for the right candidates. If you concentrate your job search on these smaller gigs, which other job seekers mostly ignore, you could land yourself a job much faster and with a smaller company that treasures your skills and offers you the right atmosphere to grow and develop.

But whichever method you choose, remember that a job search is only as interesting as you make it out to be. Invest your time and effort in a smart job search rather than a conventional job search and see how enjoyable the experience can really be – or how soon you can land that dream job.
