How To Teach Spelling
If you are the parent of a school aged child it’s important that you know how to teach spelling. You may think that’s solely the job of your child’s teacher, but some of that burden falls on you.
Although your child is taught spelling on a regular basis at school, it’s difficult for most children to learn the exact spelling of each of the words they are assigned. It’s very common in elementary school for children to be given a list of spelling words to work on each week.
A common misconception is that you want to use memorization techniques as a method of how to teach spelling. Although this can certainly be effective when a child is learning how to spell simple words, it becomes more difficult when they are introduced to more comprehensive words.
Teachers know how to teach spelling because it is a skill they learn during their own education when they are introduced to different techniques. One technique that many teachers use, that parents who want to know how to teach spelling can use, is helping the child sound out each letter.
This can seem like a burdensome task mainly because it can take a child a long time to grasp the different sounds that the letters make. A parent who is using this technique to teach spelling should begin with a certain letter of the alphabet. By asking the child which letter they are currently studying at school, the parent can reinforce the work at home.
Another great way to incorporate spelling into a child’s life is using a fun learning tool. There are many colorful booklets that outline how to teach spelling. There is a section for the parent to read and then they give the booklet to the child to study. Most of these come in several different versions depending on what level the child is spelling at. They use things like pictures and coloring activities as a method of how teaching correct spelling.
Computer software is another resource that a parent who is interested in how to teach spelling can use. Many young children are very familiar with how to use their home computer. If a parent wants to help their child with spelling purchases a software program that shows how to teach spelling, they can give their child an advantage when it comes to the classroom.
Most of these types of programs have fun activities that the child can easily do. Some involve matching the correct spelling of a word to a picture. If the child does it correctly, the software program congratulates them with a flashing banner or loud sounds. Children love this as it makes them feel proud of their accomplishment.
When a parent gets involved in their child’s education and encourages them to learn effective spelling techniques, the child benefits in many ways.
