House Party
The movie Animal House, with John Belushi, probably more than any other movie, popularized the idea of the stereotypical house party. It didn’t take much to make the idea appealing though; house parties have played a big role in just about any high-school or college based movie or television show in the past twenty years. And why not? House parties were (and still are in some places) seen as the epitome of college irresponsibility. Hundreds of people packed into a tiny house makes for a lot of social interaction in a short period of time, and is often seen as the center of the college social scene.
So, if you want to host your own house party, your odds of success are better if you follow a few simple rules. First and foremost, it isn’t much of a house party if nobody knows about it. So, you’re going to have to invite some people. Not only that, but encourage the people you invite to bring along their friends, and event their friends’ friends. Nothing is worse than a party where nobody shows up.
Now, once you have a lot of people coming to your house party, be conscious that you don’t want other certain people coming around, like the cops. If you’re in a residential area and your party gets too loud, somebody, probably a neighbor, is guaranteed to call the cops. There are two ways to handle this. The first is to invite all your neighbors to the party, either in person (best) or by written invitation (good). This both makes them feel included and lets them know that a house party will be going on. Even if they don’t show up, they’ll be less likely to call the cops if they know about things in advance and if you’ve made an effort to warn them. The other way to handle the situation is to try to tone things down and make sure that people don’t get loud outside of the house. If you’ve got music and conversation inside it’s not too bad, but if you’ve got music or people making a lot of noise outside you’re going to run into trouble.
Finally, a house party isn’t a house party without proper food and beverages. Food usually isn’t a real big deal; just set out some snack food for people to munch on. It’s usually nice if you, the host, provides beverages, though providing alcoholic beverages for a lot of people can get real expensive real quick. Many people who host big house parties will charge a fee, either with a cash bar or by charging a fee to get a glass to cover the cost of alcohol. Though some will try to charge cover fees to get in the house, this generally backfires, making the host look like a jerk.
