History Movies

A good way to teach is using history movies. Many different subjects can be complemented by the use of history movies. Not only can these movies help teach, but they can also be rather entertaining to a class of students who have spent their entire lives immersed in technology. The use of history movies can interest students who are easily distracted during a regular lecture.

The best subject to use history movies for is an actual history class. There are many different movies based on history out there. The question is which is the right one for the particular part of history you want to show to your students?

When picking out the right history movies for your class, you need to establish exactly what point from history or event in history you want your class to remember. Often, a large percentage of students remember things they have seen that have not come from a teacher or professor.

Another subject where history movies can be used is English. If your students are having a hard time imaging what an author's life was like, or you would like to show them what sort of things they lived with, history movies are a good way to do this.

Often, an author's works from long ago are based in their time period. If a certain book is especially being studied, a movie may be found that is based on the book. Not all “history movies” show actual events that happened: some may be considered history movies if they show the trends and beliefs of a time in the past. This can be helpful in getting the point of a book across.

Since some history movies convey the atmosphere of a time period, an author may have had a certain viewpoint in mind when writing a book. By showing a movie of the period, students can come to appreciate the political activism shown in some classics.

There is a caution to using history movies as a teaching tool, though. Hollywood often likes to twist events and fashions of different time periods for their own purposes. If you happen to use history movies that are not documentaries, then you absolutely need to make your students aware that not everything in a movie is entirely factual. The younger a student is, the easier time that student has of believing that everything in the movies truly happened. As long as students understand that not all movies are real events, even if they are based fact.

History movies can make a world of difference in class. By choosing the right movie to convey an important message the students will learn more as they visually enjoy a blast from the past.
