Hangover Remedy

So you just had to have that last round of drinks last night, and now you’ve never felt worse. Your head is pounding, the room is spinning, the very thought of food makes you ill. Is there anything you wouldn’t consider trying as a hangover remedy? If you’ve got a really bad one, you’re probably willing to do anything to find some hangover relief. Here’s a suggestion; shoot yourself in the head.

If you’ve thought it through and decided not to take my advice, well then you’re in for some suffering and there’s really no way around it. Trust me, I wish there was some magical hangover remedy that worked instantly but there really isn’t. However, there are some hangover remedies that can help take the edge off.

Finding a good hangover remedy really starts with what kind of symptoms you have and how severe. What may work for a mild hangover will actually make a severe hangover worse. For example, coffee, or other caffeinated beverages will alleviate mild headaches, but if you have a severe hangover caffeine may actually make you feel worse.

The best hangover remedy I’ve found is rehydrating yourself. Because many of the symptoms of a hangover are due to dehydration, getting a steady intake of fluids is a good start. The rest of the symptoms of a hangover are due to the chemical acetaldehyde, a metabolite product of alcohol that is very toxic and generally makes you feel like death warmed over. Bringing in plenty of fluids will also help you flush out this toxin, and therefore is a great hangover remedy.

When I say fluids here, I’m referring to clear liquids without caffeine or other diuretics. Gatorade, or other beverages with a little sugar work best if your stomach is queasy. If you’ve been vomiting, don’t force yourself to drink. Wait until your nausea has subsided a little and then slowly begin to drink fluids.

Eating is also a good hangover remedy. Once you are able to keep food down, you’re on the road to recovery. You can than increase the amount of fluids you drink and even try taking some painkillers. Don’t overdo it though; it’s easy to go from feeling just fine to feeling nauseas all over again! When you are ready to eat, stick to easily digestible foods. A big greasy breakfast with sausage, bacon and eggs is probably not a good idea, even if you think you can keep it down just fine. Have some cereal or oatmeal instead, or if you’re really hurting just some plain toast with a little butter.

In the end, time is the best hangover remedy. You’ll feel better soon once your body gets rid of those toxins. Hang in there and try not to drink so much next time!
