Graphic Organizers
Students have various learning styles. Many students fair well as they listen to a lecture because they are auditory learners. Auditory learners are not the norm in the classroom. Few people retain information that they hear. Many people do retain information that they see. Teachers appeal to the visual learners through using aids like graphic organizers in their lessons.
Graphic organizers not only benefit the visual learners, but they reinforce the important information and concepts in a concise manner. They also provide organization that is vital to aid memory and to improve comprehension. These teaching tools are very flexible and can be changed to suit a specific subject. There are also a number of general formats that a teacher can follow. One format will be more appropriate to the goals and objectives of the lesson plan than another.
Some teachers choose to work a visual organizational tool into the lesson plan to reinforce facts and ideas that are important to remember. This helps the students obtain information through rote memorization. The clean, concise format of the graphic organizers helps students take in and retain the facts and general concepts in a visual way. This is not only helpful to students who are visual learners. It is also helpful to students who learn by doing.
Kinesthetic learners retain information best if they have an opportunity to actively create something as the information is presented. A teacher can instruct students in the class to make graphic organizers themselves as an assignment. This is a great activity for students who are familiar with graphic organizers and it is a great cooperative learning activity.
There are a few things to consider when deciding which graphic organizers are appropriate for certain lesson plans. A teacher who wants to show how a series of events follow the same pattern to reach the same results over and over again would want to use a cycle graphic organizer. This visual aid is logically constructed by using a circle and labeling the series of events as they react, leading back to the beginning.
On the other hand, a simple chain of events format could be used for occurrences that lead to a unique outcome specific to the events covered in class. This graphic organized summarizes events and lists them chronologically, finally leading to the ultimate ending. This format is very good to use in Social Studies and English courses.
Graphic organizers come in many shapes and forms. When deciding which one is right for your class, consider your objectives and break down the concepts into their simplest components. Students will appreciate the ability to reinforce information and concepts at a glance.
