Garment Bag
Instead of a plastic bag or a suitcase, many people use a garment bag to carry or store their clothes. While for those of us who are moving or are unprepared, a plastic bag works well – just cut or tear a small whole in the top, stick the hanger through, gently tape the hanger to the plastic bag to prevent your clothes from falling out the bottom and voila! You have an instant garment bag! And it’s free, too.
Or you can just use the plastic bags that come from the drycleaners as a garment bag to protect your clothes temporarily. This is convenient for moving, rather than folding all the clothes that you normally hang up into boxes, you can just keep them on the hangers and put them into homemade garment bags.
A large bag will fit many items of clothing, and to unpack, you just pull them all out of your plastic bag and hang them up in your new closet. Then you throw away or hand off the makeshift garment bag to a friend who is moving.
For a traveler, a proper (not thin plastic) garment bag or suit bag may be a good investment. It helps keep your suit or dress wrinkle free and clean smelling, as well as often being allowed in the airplane cabin as carry on luggage. So even if your luggage gets lost, you are still able to look prepared and business-like for that important meeting or dress appropriately for a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant. Just don’t forget to stick a tie into the bag along with your suit.
You can even get garment bags that match your luggage and conveniently attach to the larger of the set of suitcases, or fold neatly inside the suitcase. New garment bags and rental garment bags often come with fun extras, such as pockets for matching accessories or matching bags for dress shoes. You can now accessorize your luggage with bags for your accessories.
Sometimes a garment bag comes with your suit or dress. This is useful for hanging the article of clothing in your closet - just don’t forget to label the outside with which suit or dress is in the bag if you have several already in your closet.
A garment bag will keep suits and dresses that you don’t wear as often looking sharp and fresh, and prevent them from getting wrinkled by other hanging articles of clothing. It’s a good way to take better care of your clothes.
