Although console video game systems seem to be all the rage today, and as a whole dominate the gaming market, the PC remains the single most popular platform for games. With by far the largest selection of games available, an avid video game lover should not overlook the gaming potential of a good gaming PC.
The main advantage of a gaming PC is its endless upgrade ability. When you buy a console, you are going to be limited to the games that come out for that console, and a few years later that console and its games are going to be technologically obsolete. Though your PC will likewise be obsolete in the same time period, you can bring it in for an upgrade and continue to play current games with it. Games that come out for the PC are almost always technologically up to date, with the best sound and graphics engines available. Games for a console are going to be limited to the specifications of the console.
Personally, I think games that come out for the PC tend to be better games overall, and not just because they are made with the most current graphics. Even games that come out for both the PC and one or more consoles tend to play better on the PC. Often times a game that was popular on a console will come out in an ‘extended’ or somehow modified version just for the PC. Games that are made only for the PC seem to be better written, and higher quality games.
If you like racing games, fighting games, first person or third person shooters and don’t really care about plot or quality writing, consoles will probably be ok for you. If you like more depth to your games, you’ll find a much greater selection with a good gaming PC.
The only downside to making a decent gaming PC is the price. A top of the line system designed for games can run you upwards to $2,000 USD or more if you want a crazy high end monitor. With $1,5000 you can get a very decent gaming PC, able to run current games, but even this is a daunting amount of money to pay for just games. For this reason, unless you’re rich, its not advisable to get a PC just for games.
The good news is, a good gaming PC is also a good everything PC. If your PC runs games well, it can run anything well. High speed internet, music, lots of storage, graphical software, photo editing, movies, anything you want. Suddenly the price tag is a little more reasonable.
If you are a gaming fan and were about to drop over a $1,000 on a new PC anyway, its probably worthwhile for you to spend a few hundred dollars more to make it a good gaming PC. The most important aspects you should focus on are processor speed, RAM memory, graphics card, and hard drive space. If you’re strong in all these areas, you’ll be able to play any game that comes out.
