Diversity Lottery

It was not until recently I heard of the diversity lottery. Maybe it was not until recently that the concept of implementing a diversity lottery came about. But I have to say before I gave the concept credit or full, investigative attention, I was skeptical. The first thing I thought of, before knowing anything about it, was not the money lotteries we obsess over nationwide (here in the United States, anyway). I immediately thought of the famous Shirley Jackson work, THE LOTTERY, wherein characters are part of a community that gathers at the town square, each putting his or her name on a slip of paper and each getting his or her slip back—one having a black mark on it signifying that person is to be stoned to death. I am not sure if there was an implication that the lottery was held because the town was overpopulated and starving or if I just read that in as one of the possible motives behind such a crude solution. But I read the work a zillion years ago and now should focus on what we came here for, information on our diversity lottery.

According to an overview of the diversity lottery by the United States government, the following points hold:

It is formally titled the Diversity Lottery Program, or abbreviated DV.

The diversity lottery is made available only to “countries with a low rate of immigration to the United States.”

The diversity lottery is held once every year.

It includes 55,000 immigrant visas—to be appointed. 5,000 of those are “allocated for use under NACARA”…starting with the 1999 diversity lottery.

While 55,000 immigrant visas are issued, the lottery officials randomly draw 110,000 applications…the number based on the logic that “many will not complete the visa process (evidently HALF?).

Anyone receiving a diversity lottery visa is then authorized to 1) live permanently in the United States; 2) work permanently in the United States; 3) allowed to bring his or her spouse to live permanently in the U.S.; and 4) allowed to bring any unmarried children under the age of 21 to live in the U.S..

More information on the DV program is at http://uscis.gov/graphics/services/residency/divvisa.htm. There you will find guidelines and information on how you can participate in the program; whether or not the new fiscal year/diversity lottery has begun; what the previous year’s lottery results are; and important information on bogus/fraudulent copycat sites claiming to run the diversity lottery.

Best of luck, and be glad this lottery is not that of the kind Shirley Jackson depicted!
