Desktop Cases
Unless you are a serious computer hobbyist, you probably have not given much thought to desktop computer cases. After all, desktop cases are not all that important to most people compared to the computer that is inside. Most computer only care about desktop cases in a few ways. They want a small footprint – which is a term for the amount of space taken up by the computer case on your desk – and they want a desktop case which looks pretty, or interesting. They might like lights or a sleek body design on it. In fact, if you have seen the new Apples, you will understand how far this design concept can be taken by some companies. But, serious computer enthusiasts are looking for almost the opposite in desktop cases.
The fact is, the smaller and sleeker your desktop case, the harder it will be to get inside of it and work on the computer itself. This is even true in desktop cases for Apples, which reflect Apple's philosophy that the computer is not something which the user should look inside, but instead something that is only for Apple technicians. But even for IBM compatible PCs, the trend has been away from the huge, bulky and accessible cases which used to dominate the computer market, and towards smaller and smaller cases which are almost impossible to get inside and change anything. So, if you want to install more memory, good luck. Same if you want new sound or graphics cards in modern desktop cases. I am not saying that it is not possible – I have done it myself. But it certainly is a pain, and you can not really do it without worrying about ruining the new equipment that you are installing.
The desktop cases preferred above all others by big computer fans are big, ugly, made of steel, and have large detachable doors which give you plenty of room to work inside of the box. They are not fancy looking, but are durable and have plenty of slots for expansion of memory, and the insertion of new cards. Appearance is not really an issue for a hobbyist's computers, and I have known many computer hackers whose rooms are crowded with desktop cases which don't even have the cover on, but sit there with the inner workings of the computer exposed for easy access. After all, if they close up the computer case, they will only have to open it again.
