Celestial Seasonings is a very popular specialty tea company that originated in Colorado in 1969. Founder Mo Siegel gathered wild herbs in the forests and canyons of the Rocky Mountains near Aspen, Colorado to make healthy herbal teas. One day while exploring with friends and family near Boulder, Colorado, Mo and his friend, Wyck Hay, discovered a bountiful area full of wild herbs. This harvest produced five hundred pounds of Mo’s first herbal blend tea, “MO’s 36 Herb Tea”, which was packaged in hand sewn muslin bags and sold to a local health food store. Soon thereafter the entrepreneurs purchased an old barn in Boulder and began to purchase herbs in addition to herbs they harvested themselves, and expanded their market to include health food stores throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and the east coast. In 1972, Celestial Seasonings introduced “Red Zinger Herb Tea”, which remains one of the company’s best sellers.
Celestial Seasonings herb teas changed the way consumers perceived teas, which had been seen as only medicinal remedies.
