In addition to meeting stringent educational and training requirements, most board certified plastic surgeons have chosen to specialize in certain areas, such as facial procedures, breast augmentation, or reconstructive surgery. When a doctor specializes, he or she gains invaluable knowledge and insight, and will be able to address any concerns you may have prior to the operation. Furthermore, a specialist will likely have a better eye for what "looks good" than a doctor who engages in general practice.
The bottom line is that there are risks associated with all surgical procedures, including those of the cosmetic variety. You will no doubt have a lot of questions and feel a bit nervous before going in to get the work done. Knowing that you will be in the hands of a board certified plastic surgeon can help reduce your anxiety and give you some much-needed peace of mind.
