Blocking Software
Like most households in the United States we have a home computer. Unlike most households our computer is a recent addition to the family. I am still amazed at the wealth of information that is available with only a few clicks of the keyboard. As with all good and wonderful things there are also the objectionable and distasteful sides to unlimited information. I believe in free speech and advocate for individual rights, however I do not want my children exposed to things that I find offensive, especially within our home. I found that by using blocking software I can monitor what my children are exposed to without needing to sit next to them at our computer. I want them to feel free to do their homework and communicate with friends and play games when I am in another room or away from home, but I also know that children are naturally curious and may get involved in web sites that can be unhealthy for them.
Blocking software allows for controls of what sites are accessible. This can include instant messaging, email, chat rooms and websites. The blocking software can be adjusted to fit the needs of the user. It can be set up to simply monitor and record all usage of the computer. This is done by accessing a report that you can set up to give you the information of what sites have been visited, when and for how long. This includes email usage and chat rooms.
Blocking software can also be set up to filter access to certain sites. These filters are adjustable and can be changed. The changes are made through the use of passwords. Some of the blocking software packages include the ability to remotely monitor and change filters, so that even if you are away from home you can monitor what your child is doing on the home computer. Filters can be set up for specific topics. There are blocking software programs that block pornography. There can also be filters and limits placed to block advertisements. The blocking software is able to shut off communications in chat rooms if an offense, which you have created in the filtering system, should occur. This allows chat room communication to be available to the user of the computer, but also protects the user from being exposed to something you find offensive. Most blocking software programs are compatible with all Microsoft applications.
Blocking software is also a tool that can be used by businesses to filter the use of the internet by employees. This allows employees to access areas of the internet that are needed to complete their jobs, but limits surfing the net and personal activities during work hours.
Something you need to be aware of when using blocking software. There are web sites that allow you to get around filters that the software install. These sites will show you how to get around the filters and blocks. They will show you what codes to enter to bypass the filters. The blocking software is familiar with some of the sites that do this and will filter them also, but there are new sites and methods developed routinely. By using the reports that are generated by the blocking software you will be able to track if any of these sites are being utilized and you can add them to the filters.
Blocking software helps me to have peace of mind when my children are using the computer without me present. I still check what they are doing and monitor how much time they spend on the computer, but I can rely on the software reports to back up what the children are telling me regarding the amount of time they are spending on the computer as well as what they are doing with their time.
