If you are in human resources, or are the manager of a company of any size, it is important, even crucial that you have an affirmative action program. A good affirmative action program will help your business in many ways. Not only does it help you to protect it against possible discrimination suits, but it also helps you to find the best people there are out there by working to counteract invisible biases that exist in almost every business. Women are as smart as men, and blacks are as smart as whites, yet often one group is consistently under-employed or under-paid when the other group is in a position of power. Although you may not be party to it yourself, nonetheless there is institutional bias that runs throughout our society which can best be corrected by an affirmative action program, and is very hard to address otherwise. Without the use of an affirmative action program to effectively evaluate your employment policies, you may be missing out on all kinds of talented human resources because they are from members of traditionally under-represented cultures.
Of course, for any organization doing business with the government, an affirmative action program, or AAP, is absolutely necessary. If you do not have a working affirmative action program, you can lose valuable government contracts like that. For many businesses, an affirmative action program does not just make good business sense – it is an absolute business necessity. If you do not implement a program for affirmative action, and keep it up to date, you may be sabotaging your business without even knowing it, and that is absolutely the honest truth.
