Barcode Scanner
Each time I go to the neighborhood supermarket, I never cease to be amazed by the simple convenience that makes the check out process so much faster. Yes, I am talking about the barcode scanners fitted at all the counters which enable the personnel to move the queue faster and faster. Each time I wonder about how laborious the activity might have been before barcode scanners came into being. This time around, I decided to find out more about this omni present device.
The technology behind the barcode scanner is relatively simple. It works on the principle of optical recognition. Ever noticed those little thick and thin black lines tucked away at the bottom of nearly every packaged good you buy? Well, that is nothing but a barcode and is the reason the barcode scanners are able to identify and bill products so easily. The barcode is a simple eight to twelve digit number that is converted into a scannable code format.
And when combined with the barcode scanner, it can not only identify the product and determine its pricing, but also work towards helping the supermarket maintain its stock registers. Since each product is bar coded when it comes into the supermarket, tallying up the outgoing products against the stock of remaining products would effectively present the day’s takings as well a the remainder of the stock. While in the olden days this was a laborious activity that the accountant or the owner of the shop indulged in, with the advent of the barcode scanner, it has become an automatic process.
Although the barcode as a concept has been around for quite some time, it was not till the late eighties that it began to be used commercially on a large scale. The reason behind this was that barcode scanners of the times were bulky, expensive machines. And ill a cheaper, mass producible option was discovered and began to be manufactured, using barcode technology was an expensive proposition.
Today, nearly every product is bar coded and makes use of a barcode scanner. Even fruits and vegetables, while till some time ago were sold by weight and difficult to barcode, are now bar coded by the means of simple stickers pasted on them. This means that no product in the supermarket of today needs to be manually entered. This not only saves time for both the seller and the buyer, but also ensures that thefts of items are curtailed. The barcode and the barcode scanner combination has an additional advantage in that they form a competent anti theft device.
